On this day in 1997 Puff Daddy, Faith Evans and 112 began an 11-week streak at the top of the charts with their Grammy-winning dedication track to the Notorious B.I.G. The hit was released on May 27- just two and a half months after Biggie’s murder- as the second single from Puff Daddy and The Family’s “No Way Out”. The jam’s 77-day run was at number one on the United States singles chart but was also a number one on the U.K. charts for a period of time as well. The rap ballad was actually completed before permission was granted by Sting for borrowing from the Police’s 1983 “Every Breath You Take.” However, Sting participated in a 1997 performance of the Notorious tribute at the MTV Video Music Awards. Sting also receives 100 percent of publishing royalties for the song. Reminisce upon the outstanding bond these artists had with the late and great B.I.G as sidekick, wife and fellow musicians through watching the music video for the song below.
