Yesterday, April 29, marks the 21st anniversary of the 1992 Los Angeles riots that allegedly took place following the acquittal of four police officers involved with the brutality against Rodney King.

More than $1 billion in damages were estimated amongst the widespread robberies and arson citywide. 53 people were killed in the riots and over 2,000 were rendered injured.

King suffered fractures, permanent brain damage, broken bones and teeth, kidney damage, emotional and physical trauma. He then settled for $3.8 million.

1996 Sublime song written by the late Bradley Nowell, “April 29,1992 (Miami)” (originally entitled “April 29, 1992 (Leary)”), refers to these LA riots as well as the Rodney King beating. The official day of the events, and the title of the song, is accidentally pronounced “April 26, 1992” in recorded take of the first lyric. Sublime felt that specific take was solid enoughto keep, so they did.
